Best Computer Cases in 2020 – Buying Guide

Types of Computer Cases

ATX and ITX

You’ll see on computer cases that they either support ATX, ITX or both. This relates to the size of the motherboard that is going to be compatible with the case. ATX is the most commonly used and the one you’ll mostly see, as this the full-sized board many are used to.

ITX, on the other hand, is the smaller type of board with fewer PCI slots and fewer RAM slots. These are generally only seen on smaller computer cases as smaller cases can’t support the size of an ATX motherboard. There are also extended and micro versions of these motherboards.

Different sizes

There are three main computer case sizes. The right one for you will depend on your specific needs and which type of motherboard you intend on having.

Full tower – These towers will measure between 22″ – 27″ in height and are able to hold a high level of internal hardware. They will always be capable of holding an ATX motherboard but also an extended ATX (EATX) which may be useful for some users.

Mid-tower – This size is by far the most common as you can usually get in everything you need and is a lot more compact. They’ll be between 17″ – 21″ and able to hold an ATX motherboard. A lot of them can also hold an ITX motherboard but there is no reason why this would be needed.

Mini – If you need a compact solution then a mini case is going to be the best for you. They will be able to hold an ITX motherboard and will be between 14” – 16” in height. They should also be able to hold a micro ATX (mATX) too.

Other options – There are a few other options but these are a lot more specialized and not shown here. You can get an Ultra Tower which is over 27″ but on the other end of the scale, you can get Small Form Factor cases which can only hold a mini-ITX motherboard with very limited drive bays, expansion slots and fans.

How to Choose a Computer Case

Aesthetics

While they are not going to affect the performance of your computer, everyone cares about whether it looks good but some will care a lot more than others. A lot of this will come down to individual preference.  A transparent side is often favored and you want to take other factors into account such as the I/O port placement.

Budget

Before you look at cases you need to know what you’ll be prepared to pay. There is a range of brilliant high-quality cases between $75-100. If you’re looking for premium quality then there are a few great options above this. If you’re on more of a budget then you’ll still be able to pick up a great case for around $50.

Internal storage

Before you buy your computer case it’s a good idea to write down exactly what you put in it and also what you may want to add to it in the future. This is vital as you need to know if you can add everything to the case you want.

This involves knowing how much you need of the following:

  • 25” drive bays
  • 5” drive bays
  • 5” drive bays
  • Expansion slots
  • Graphics cards
  • Case fans

A low-capacity mini-tower, for example, may hold just one 5.25″ drive bay and two fans. A high-capacity full-tower may hold six drives bays and 10 case fans. This will vary from model to model but it’s just an example of how you need to assess your needs. The last thing you want to do is get a computer case only to find out it’s not big enough for your needs.

Tool-less design

It wasn’t too long ago that to build a computer you’d tire your arm out using a small screwdriver to fix everything into place. A lot of these models need a minimal amount of screwing whereas others are completely tool-free and exceptionally easy to build.

Cable management

There are two problems with cables. They are both ugly to look at and they can also get in the way. Getting a case with good cable management is important if you want to reduce stress and make your case look better. All of the models we’ve looked at here are quite good at it but some are better than others.
