It’s 2020, and gaming and fitness are no longer mutually exclusive. You can get your sweat on while playing video games from the comfort of your own home thanks to motion control gaming consoles.
The Xbox One, successor to the Xbox 360, is one such console that allows for motion control gaming. When paired with the Kinect, you can control and interact with your video game screen using hand gestures and verbal commands.
While Microsoft discontinued the Kinect in October 2017, you can still purchase a Kinect to play your favorite fitness games. It also serves as a voice command feature akin to an Amazon Echo. To sync it up with your Xbox One, you’ll just need to buy an adapter as well.
In order to start exercising from home with one of the video games below, make sure you have the following equipment. You’ll need

Zumba Fitness World Party is the 4th version of the Zumba series. The Xbox One allows for up to two players to play at once.
This game is perfect for both beginner and advanced dancers who want to get a workout in at home. There are 45 pre-set classes that include various dance styles such as Bollywood, calypso, cumbia, hip-hop, Irish step, reggaeton, salsa, and more. You can also create customizable workouts with multiple types of dances. Routines can be set as low, medium or high-intensity.
To keep things interesting, the game lets you unlock songs from seven parts of the world as you progress. As you dance and complete sets, the game keeps track of all your stats, including technique score, calories burned, and specific goals met. The more goals you meet, the more bonus rewards you can unlock. The rewards include things like behind-the-scenes videos and in-game collectibles.
All in all, Zumba Fitness World Party is an excellent game with fun dance workouts, regardless of skill. Another thing to consider is that Zumba classes can get expensive, so this game can be an affordable way to virtually attend as many Zumba classes as you want without breaking the bank. The game does a great job creating the party-like atmosphere of a Zumba class in your room.

Shape Up is a fun fitness game for the Xbox One that lets players workout to novel situations. Game modes include punching asteroids, squatting to the moon, and bench pressing elephants, to name a few. With its arcade style visuals, Shape Up makes working out at home entertaining. When you can no longer do anymore pushups and collapse on the ground, you’ll see your character on screen collapse from an elephant as well!
The in-game instructor also happens to be witty and funny. Midway through sets, as you’re already panting and heaving, he might throw out an “Ok, now jump squats…just kidding.”
The game tracks your scores, allowing you to keep progress on your improvements. This is a great way of gamifying exercise and you’ll feel great as you can visualize your goals. The game lets you play both single player and multiplayer, making it fun for the whole family.

Kinect Sports Rivals is the perfect at-home fitness game for sports enthusiasts. The game includes popular sports like soccer, tennis, and bowling, as well as uncommon games like rock climbing, archery, and jetski racing.
The unique thing about this game is it rewards accuracy and responsiveness. Small movements, like swerving your body on a jetski, or following through with your archery shot, are rewarded. At the same time, you’ll probably still work up a sweat as it’s easy to lose track of time when you’re having a blast playing.
Keep in mind you some space to play this game, so it works best in large living rooms. Also, not all of the games are two players (tennis, for instance, is single player). If you have a bit of a competitive nature, though, this game is perfect for you.

The latest version of Just Dance runs a lot smoother than previous versions. On-screen moves are a lot smoother and look way cooler. Just Dance 2019 had a lot of counterintuitive moves that were often uncomfortable or difficult to do over and over.
Included in the purchase is a one month free trial to Just Dance Unlimited, which gives you access to over 500+ songs. All in all, Just Dance 2020 is a great purchase for kids and family alike who want to dance and work up a sweat at home.

Unlike the other games, where you’re dancing or playing sports, Your Shape: Fitness Involved is more akin to having a personal trainer at the gym do a resistance training workout with you. The game was developed with help from Men’s Health and Women’s Health magazines.
What’s great about this game is it’ll teach you how to correctly do important functional exercises, like squats and lunges. You can also take classes like yoga, martial arts, and tai chi from experts. The trainers will also take you through warmup and cooldowns, which are important injury prevention methods whenever you exercise.
If you’re looking for a more personalized at home workout, with a trainer that won’t let you slack, give Your Shape a try.
Similar to Your Shape, Nike+ Kinect Training offers a more personalized workout with athletic trainers to push you to your limits. What’s unique about this game is it’s designed for athletes to specialize and improve in their sport. It starts you off with an initial test to gauge your fitness level, then designs a specific program for you. That said, anyone can play the game to get a tough workout in.
If you play this game seriously, it will kick your butt. You’ll want gym attire and running shoes, with some water handy. Sessions are about 30 minutes and are comprised of 10 warmup activities, 15 main activities, and 2 cooldown activities. Like the other games here, this will require a decent amount (probably at least 6 ft) of space.

Fans of The Biggest Loser TV series will be able to follow along with some of the exact workouts participants used in this game. The game is hosted by personal trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels, and features dozens of former contestants.
Players can create custom fitness routines from more than 125 exercise moves, or do one of the 10 pre-set programs like Belly Buster and Boot Camp. The game also comes with an array of healthy recipes and diet programs so you can track and measure your caloric intake. This is really useful, as diet is actually more important than exercise when it comes to losing weight.
The Biggest Loser Xbox 360 game is great for fitness beginners and those that want a more guided, hand-held program.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn self-defense from the comfort of your own home, all while burning some calories, Self-Defense Training Camp is an option. This game will teach you over 30 real self-defense moves from professional instructors. As you perform the moves, the game gives you immediate feedback to perfect your form.
The game also features various cardio exercises ala martial arts and kickboxing classes, and will test your reflexes with a variety of boxing mini games.
However, the game leaves a lot to be desired. Some people also report the game does a poor job tracking movements properly.
- New In Box, Never Used, Never Opened
- Requires Kinect (Not Included)
Similarly to Self-Defense Training Camp, this game will teach you self defense but with a focus on MMA movements: wrestling, kickboxing, and Muay Thai. This game lets you custom build workout programs, along with 30 and 60-day challenges to really motivate you.
The lessons are taught by real UFC trainers and fighters. You can practice kicking, jabbing, and boxing against real fighters, and the Kinect will pick up your movement to give you tips on how to better your form. Overall, a great game for any UFC enthusiasts.
