As of May 31, 2019, TetrisFriends.com has been shut down. The site had over a million registered users and was the most popular place to play Tetris online, particularly for multiplayer formats. If you’re looking for alternatives, we’ve got you covered.
Why Did TetrisFriends Shut Down?
TetrisFriends was shut down as its parent company, Tetris Online, Inc. closed.
A member of the team posted the following quote on reddit:
Hello friends of the TetrisFriends.com
The end is near and we already know the date.May 31, 2019 will be the last day of TetrisFriends. We had a great time playing and had so many wonderful games. I personally have a really strong emotional bond to the game. I got to know one of my best friends in the TetrisFriends multiplayer. This game will always have a special place in my heart.
Best TetrisFriends Alternatives
Here are some links you can still use to play Tetris online against other players. You can play these on any laptop or PC – if you’re looking for a suggestion, play on your Fierce PC.
Of these options, Jstris is the easiest way to start playing Tetris. You don’t have to download anything or create an account. It also has the most people online. Just note that blocks in Jstris drop much faster than they do in TetrisFriends.
The downside is these sites don’t boast nearly the same userbase or UI/UX that Tetris Friends did. One of the great things about TetrisFriends was its ranking system, such that you’d only play against players near your skill level.
Puyo Puyo Tetris
If you don’t mind paying a bit of money, the best Tetris game right now is Puyo Puyo Tetris. It’s available on PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.

Puyo Puyo Tetris is arguably the closest thing to Tetris Friends, as the user interface is nicely designed and the game comes with a ranking system. Players have a rating (elo), statewide rank, and worldwide rank, so it can be quite competitive. One difference is the game is faster than TetrisFriends, but slower than Jstris, which strikes a nice balance.
There are also a ton of game modes, from single player adventure, multiplayer arcade, 1v1 versus, puzzle league, and a cool fusion game of Puyos and Tetriminos.
